My favourite cups of coffee are made by yours truly and are absolutely nothing fancy.
Ingredients:
A mug,
Jar of Instant Nescafe Original,
Sugar,
Milk,
a Kettle with Water.

While the kettle is boiling, put 1 and a bit tea spoons of coffee and 2 sugars into the mug.

Put milk into the mug on top of the sugar and coffee and stir until kettle is boiled

When kettle boils, wait about 15 seconds and then pour in hot water.

Stir until you are satisfied and enjoy.

Now that's how to make a great cup of coffee. Simple but often executed incorrectly.

A list of Budapestclubs: West Balkan, Kultiplex, Kuplung, Trafo

The easiest form of transport (eg from Train station to Main Square - "Hauptplatz") is by tram. There are 3 tram lines. There are also many bus routes. The public service as a whole is reliable and punctual but Linz is so small that as a tourist, you mightn't need it at all. Taxis are a plenty also.

The main area of the city is the main square located just south of the Danube. This square has pubs, cafés, resteraunts and very small but very good Irish pub "The Old Dubliner" which is located down a small alley at the Guinness sign. There are 2 other Irish pubs, "The Chelsea" (which I think is English but just has Irish owners) and Kitty Kiernan's which is off the main street. During the Summer when the weather is good, the pubs and cafés have very nice set ups of tables and chairs and during the Winter there is a Christmas market where you can drink gluhwein, eat many types of food including huge pancake looking things that are probably terrible for your health but taste great or buy small Christmas gifts and decorations.

To the West of the Hauptplatz is the old town where there are more cafés, bars and great places to eat. A typical Austrian dish is schnizel obviously. I really like it. The streets are nice to walk around too and the bars generally have a great atmosphere. Sadly no names of bars specifically come to mind. The obvious choices for nightclubs are A1, and Cheese. Avoid Remembar at all costs.

Tourist attractions: In my stay I really didn't do "the tourist thing" so maybe going to the tourist office on the east of the main square would be more useful. I should have went to Pöstlingberg which is a pretty church on top of the mountain. I just never got around to it. I did go to some underground tunnels that were built to store wine or something but ended up being bomb shelters during WWII. I can't remember the name of them and I can't find information about them online. There is a museum of modern art which is lit up red or blue. It changes every night. There is plenty to do in Linz but I just didn't get around to doing it.

Also the Blackwings are something to check out if ice hockey isn't big in your country as I went to my first ice hockey game and it was alot of fun.

Budapest

Budapest A Tourists Guide by Yours Truely

I was waiting for 24 to load and I thought why not throw in a quick post listing the "best" places in Budapest, in my opinion of course. So I suppose I'll start with the Szechenyi Thermal Baths which I think are probably, in an all round sense, the best Baths in Budapest. Szechenyi has a variety of different indoor baths at different temperatures and outdoor there is a regular "lane-d" swimming pool (use of swimming caps is mandatory) and two baths one hot the other not so but the colder one has a swirl pool thingy and a jacuzzi. There is also two steam rooms, two saunas and plunge pools. There are many other services which I have not indulged in e.g. massages, which have gotten mixed reviews and apparently mud baths???? It's not the cheapest baths but depending upon the length of time you spend in them you receive a refund, anything from nothing to 1000ft (4€). Others baths include Gellért(expensive and dirty apparently), Király, Rudas(gay gay gay) and Lukács among others, the website one should visit for more info is "Budapest Spas". My favourite baths in Hungary though have to be the ones in Szeged.

Restaurants: This is a little tricky as Budapest just has so many and pretty much all are great value for money and serve excellent food, well the ones i have been in. My pick out of the bunch is Stex Ház, which is located opposite the tram stop Barross Utca on the 4,6 line, its great food, great value and has a good atmosphere. Generally the waiters are adequate but sometimes one has to speak up, if ya know what i mean. For Sale Pub and Restaurant is also good, expect large servings of quality food by very good waiters with brilliant english and an idea of what tourism is all about unlike most Hungarian waiters. Café Eklektika (30 Nagymezo Utca) is a place I really like but not everyone agrees, it has good food, excellent service and a really chilled atmosphere. It also hosts a number of lesbian events regularily for those who may be interested in that sort of thing. Momoto Ramen, chinese fast food, best mac donalds, place up near marget hid

Nightlife: well it depends upon what you're looking for really, my personal reccomendation would be West Balkan as it doesn't usually have an entrance fee, normally entertains a very cool clientele and has kickin tunes. Also Szoda and Szimpla are very very cool. In my opinion stay away from the living room, b7, Budda Inside, Rios, Old Mans, Becketts (any irish bar for that matter unless there is a match on, then head to Becketts), School Club and Soho among others.

Cinemas: Budapest has loads of cinemas multi plexs and more intimate ones eg. Corvin, Taban and Puskin see this link on Pestiside for all cinema listings.

Sight seeing

part 2 or an email re hash, i'll sort it when i get a chance

ok so the best of budapest:

well first off I would recommend visiting some thermal baths while you are here, but do so at the end of the day cause it's nice for relaxing after a day of walking. The best baths in Budapest in my opinion are the szechenyi ones in city park, they're 2200 ft which is about 9 euro, but depending upon how long you spend there, you get a refund, anything from 4 euro to 2 euro. You can get there on the yellow metro line it has it's own stop

Sightseeing wise a must is a visit to St.Stephens Basilica which is absolutly beautiful, it's a 5 minute walk from erzsabet ter which is beside deak ferenc ter (pretty much the city centre), the fishermans bastion and castle hill in general is also beautiful, and you can get there with the red metro line just go to moszkova ter, margit island is lovely for walking on if it's a nice day and it has it's own tram stop on the 4, 6 tram line(the MAIN tram line), the parliament is along the river and it is also a beautiful building, there is also heroes square (hosok ter) which is near the szechenyi baths and there are two art museums right next to the square.

My favourite hungarian restaurant is on a tram stop along the 4,6 line, the baross utca stop near rakoczi ter, it's called Stex Haz and it's across the road from the mc donalds, good food and cheap, budapest has a lot of really great restaurants

the market hall is something you should also see, it's at the end of Vaci utca, which is the main touristy street. If you like Jazz then there is a jazz bar called fat mo's on a street off vaci utca it's Nyári Pál utca.

the city is beautiful to walk around at night and safe! you should climb gellert hill at night, at say 10 or so and look at the city from there, it's an amazing view.

Ok some cool clubs and cafe's well i recommend starting off in Szimpla which is on Kazinczy utca, off Rakozci Ut, look out for the yellow sign because it's just a doorway so you have to keep an eye out for it, here's the website http://www.szimpla.hu/index_en.htm

then for a late night head to west balkan which is also hard to find but here's what you should do: go to the corvin cinema which is on the 4,6 line (stop ulloi ut) and also on the blue metro (ferenc korut), now it is a few minutes walk from the corvin

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?q=Budapest,+Hungary+(budapest)&hl=en&ie=UTF8&om=1&msa=0&ll=47.487151,19.072759&spn=0.007381,0.020084&z=16&msid=103758346425890366667.000001128469f2295295b

eh that is all i can think of right now but i shall send you more if i remember anything

have a nice time, it's a brilliant city

Cycle Touring

1. Route: First thing you need to do is go to maps.google.com and look at where you want to start, finish and places you want to visit in between. Make out a rough route, even if it is from city to city. Then look at the route in stages, each stage beginning from one major city and then ending at the next major one. Now when you focus on a stage look at the various roads which connect the two cities, obviously ignore the motorways and then pick the best route, normally a road which follows a river is the best road to pick as it is usually the most scenic and also most likely to be flat. Most of the larger european countries has 4 classifications of roads the first normally being a motorway and the 2nd a primary road neither of these are suitable for cycling, the 3rd and 4th are much better as they are quieter and pass through more scenic towns and villages. Once you have your route or idea of route you need to divide it up again into further stages of 80-100km. By doing this you can see roughly where you may be staying each night, now you don't have to do this and stick to it but it's good to have a general idea.

2. Accomodation: You have a few options here and they are hotels, hostels, b&bs, Couchsurfing and Camping. Now Hotels are expensive, as are b&bs and camping means carrying a tent and many other accessories which means added weight and the only season for camping in europe is summer as there's usually rain the rest of the year. So couchsurfing is a good idea but can be difficult to organise because you are not certain of your arrival time and when you are in the smaller towns there's no guarantee that you'll have access to internet. Couchsurfing is great though when you can do it, if you can't you'll have to find hostels and they're normally pretty good and not too expensive, using hostelworld is okay but just get the hostel information from the website, don't book through it rather get the number then call the hostel directly to book a bed, it saves you 2/3 euro each time. Hi hostels are scattered across europe but will not
show on hostelworld, beware of hostel rules, sometimes they are closed from 11am til 3/4pm. Which means if you get there early you might have to wait to book in. You might have to design your route in accordance with the availability of accomodation.

3. The Bicycle: I have only cycled a fixed gear bike when touring which is not the most practicle but I enjoyed it, A single speed bike is the best option in my opinion because it is less likely to cause you problems. Most tourers though cycle bikes such as hybrids or specific touring bike which have anything 9 to 18 gears. Do not Use a racer, they are unsuitable! When you get your bike, have it serviced, maybe a new chain, new brake pads/cables(?) new tyres and tubes, get the wheel trued, ie make sure they're straight. Look at the frame for cracks, check for missing spokes and make sure you can attach a pannier rack to the bike.

4. Equipment: You'll need pannier racks, Panniers (at least rear, maybe even front as well), a saddle bag, maybe even a handlebar bag, most of which have holders for the map, so you don't need to be digging through your bags all the time for the map. You need to have all the equipment neccessary to be able to change a puncture, so you'll need spanners unless you have quick release wheels, a puncture repair kit, spare tubes, and a pump, make sure it fits the valve
on your tube so it'll either be a dunlop or presta, some pumps are reversible so you can use them on both. Cable ties are great as is wire for fixing most things.

5. Clothing: A good pair of cycling shorts is essential, in my opinion it is best to wear the full cycling garb the cycle shorts, team jersey etc. It's a good idea to buy arm/leg warmers as they take up very little space and are easy to put on and take off. Cycling shoes are expensive as you also have to buy pedals but they are great but you can do without them. A cycling cap is cheap and useful and can be worn under a helmet which is something I stress anyone to wear! You need to pack light so only bring 3 pairs of boxers/socks, 2 t shirts, 1 shirt, 1 pair of shorts and 1 pair of trousers, you can wash your clothes in the hostel sinks or else ask a couchsurfing host to let you use their washing machine.

6. Food: Eat Eat eat eat eat eat eat, make sure you have a good breakfast, eat while you're cycling, cereal bars, chocolate, bananas, rolls, sandwiches etc, in the eveings you need to carbo load, so lots of pasta, rice and potatoes, make sure to get some protein as well.

7. Drink: drink plenty of liquids, water, coke, lucazade etc etc. always make sure your water bottles are full before you leave each morning.

8. Routine: I found what was good was to cycle for 3 consequetive days then take a day or two off, you should try and work this so that you are spending those days in nicer towns, with couchsurfers! I always prefered to get up early as well each day, get up at 6 and leave by 6.30, which meant i'd avoid the crowds and get to my destination early which means more sightseeing and relaxing, and time to suss the place out, also if you have to change plans it gives you leeway.

9. Trains: Sometimes you'll need to get a train so I would advis you know all about the country's rail system know the nearest stations and it will come in handy, do not write off getting a train sometimes it just has to be done, pretty much all the trains in europe let bikes on them, normally they charge an extra 5 euro but that's not too bad.

10. Extras: Bring a book, music, diary(essential for collecting everything from email addresses to phone numbers and the odd sappy journal entry).

My first policy paper

Due to recent events surrounding the election of the Turkish President, the Turkish military, look as though they may again become involved in the political arena. The issue of secularism is the cause for the escalation of the recent events surrounding the presidential election. The presidential election is just one aspect which has been a catalyst for a reaction from the military and the Turkish people who fear their treasured secularism may be threatened now or in the near future.

This affair began on April 27th when the Turkish parliament failed to elect a new President in the first round of voting, Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul came close to gaining the two thirds majority of votes needed to be elected, but the nationalist opposition claimed that the election was illegitimate as not enough members of Parliament took part. Then on the 29th of April there were demonstrations by both pro Islamists and secularists, there were hundreds of thousands of people at these demonstrations. At this stage the military began to become involved in the situation, through the issuing of a statement the military announced that it was a "staunch defender of secularism" and that they would present their position on the matter "when it becomes necessary". The governing party in Turkey at present is the AK party which is descended from the Welfare Party who were forced from government in 1997 by the military and subsequently banned, this was due to their Islamist roots. The AK party may be descended from the Welfare party but they have, since they came into government, been very careful not to antagonise the secularists. The AK party have created a more "European" Turkey and have successfully begun and completed the first stage of EU accession negotiations. They made a necessary compromise but acknowledging the officialdom of the Republic of Cyprus.

The reason why their has been so much controversy over an AK party member being president is that having both an Islamist Prime minister and President is not a prospect favoured by the secularists. The president may not have as much power as the prime minister but one important and controversial role the President does have is that of being the Chief of General Staff of the Army. The Chief of General staff would also be responsible for chairing the meetings involving officers who are suspected of leading a religious private life and thus would be removed from the armed services. The Turkish Army believes itself to be the defended of secularism within Turkey and has on four previous occasions removed governments who may have been a threat to secularism. In the past decade the political power of the military has been weakened thanks to a series of replacements within the head council of the military, although an EU commission reported last November that the army continues to exert a "significant political influence". On May 6th the Turkish parliament failed again to elect a president and in order to avoid escalating this political crisis there has been an early general election called for July. One priority which the AK party has is to make the Presidential elections elections for the people, this is a direct punch aimed at the opposition but indirectly aimed at secularism which has caused all this controversy. The AK party believe that an Islamist rooted politician would be elected by the Turkish people and even though Mr. Gul is proposed as being an EU man his faith will also render him under suspicion.

The key actors in this affair include: the Turkish parliament, including the ruling AK party and the opposition, the Turkish Military, the constitutional court, the Turkish people and the European Union. In the previous two paragraphs I have already mentioned how the Military have become involved and of their previous exploits in the history of Turkey's political arena. The AK party is also one of the key actors and is attempting to create a European Union friendly Turkey, they do so without forgetting their Islamist roots but seem to be careful not to bring their religion into their politics, although it seems that to do this is almost unavoidable despite their good intentions, as the opposition is consistently directly and indirectly accusing them of mixing their religion and politics. The opposition in parliament are another actor who seem to be willing to use every avenue to prevent an AK party member from becoming President whether it be the constitutional court or the military. The constitutional court has already played quite a significant role as it declared the first presidential election invalid and invoked a response from the Prime Minister who accused the court of firing a shot at the heart of democracy. The Turkish people could see a division emerge between them as many Islamists and secularists have taken a keen interest in this affair as is evident from the large numbers of people who protested in both Ankara and Istanbul. The final actor is the European Union who has already warned off the Turkish military and may have to do so again if necessary, although it might make little difference. Maybe the "modernised" version of the council of the military will value more the prospect of European membership and therefore take EU opinion more seriously.

A Typical Hungarian

This is a short answer I had to write for my hungarian culture class, its not very good, but anyone who has spent time here in budapest will kinda know what i mean, also its a little bit censored in comparison to my other writings as its a school thing ya know like, Fuck Fuck Fuck Fuck Fuck Fuck Fuck

A Typical Hungarian:

It’s always very difficult to determine what typical characteristics can define a persons nationality and subsequently associate these characteristics with this persons country. It is for that reason that I shall rather than try to describe the typical hungarian describe a number of moments of interaction i have had with hungaians since coming to Budapest. Fom Old people to students and from homeless people to the employed. The first person I wish to describe is Dani a young Hungarian who I met playing frisbee.

Dani cycles everywhere and doesn’t drive, he also plays Ultimate frisbee in his free time. He is when you first meet him very friendly and approachable and not at all stand offish. He talks with enthuisiasm about sport and his friends who are working abroad. He is also very helpful and willing to go out of his way to keep promises. My personal experience of this was when he managed to find me a bicycle frame perfect for my size and perfect to be converted into a fixed gear bicycle. Finding this sort of frame and in good condition is no easy task and without his help I wouldn’t have been able to. So what I could derive from meeting with dani is that his typical characteristics is that of friendly and helpful. The next person I want to talk about is a particular waiter in a particular restaurant on a particular street near the university.

This waiter from when we arrived at the restaurant had rushed us and his mannerisms were very unwelcoming. He tuted when we told him we weren’t ready to order and when one of our party was hesitant when ordering he actually walked away only to come back two minutes later, he did this not in a professional hospitable way rather a rude way. Throughout the dinner he came taking plates when some people were finished rather than when all of us had finished, as is the correct etiquette. To Summarise he was unhelpful, rude and probably the worst waiter I have ever encountered. We didn’t even get a chance to not tip him as service was automatically included in the bill. I’d like to say that it was a once off experience but unfortunately the majority of waiters I have delt with in the past 7 weeks have been unhelpful and rude, not all but the majority. I hope that this is just a city thing and isn’t countywide. I have mentioned this to Hungarians and it seems that generally waiters are rude to everyone, foreigners and hungarians alike. This is odd as it’s an industry where they depend on their tips and therefore should pride themselves on being hospitable. Again I must state that this is the majority of waiters and not all.

The next group of people I wish to discuss is people who run Bicycle shops. This is quite a funny one as there are a large number of similarities between the majority of bicycle shop owners in both Hungary and Ireland. I have visited quite a number of bicycle shops in both countries and the majority of the owners of these shops are very like the waiters I have mentioned above but it is always possible to find one or two places that have extremely friendly service and go out of their way to help you and encourage the sport telling you good routes to take and tips about laws and what your rights might and might not be. So I was quite surprised to find such similarities between the shops in Ireland and Hunagry.

I must actually correct myself at this stage because I must state that since being in Hungary I haven’t properly travelled about the countyside so when I say the average Hungarian I mean the average person from Budapest. There is a huge difference between people from rural societies and cities. Generally people from the countryside are initially more friendly and eager to interact with strangers in comparison to people from cities. So in summary I can try and list off some statements or views from people I know hungarians and foreigners. My friend Ian who has lived here for two years said that they love to wear suits(the men) and will take any opportunity to whip out the suit as I experienced the other night when I attended a play. I turned up in jeans, runners and a t shirt and I thought that I actually might be turned away as most of the crowd had totally “outdressed me”. My history teacher(a hungarian) told me that generally hungarians don’t like to protest let alone riot which made the riots recently quit and oddity apparently. Hungarians also seem to have similar politicians to Ireland that being that they all lie or hid the truth. An American friend of mine also stated that people in budapest don’t know “how to walk” and I have to agree. There is no order on the cities pavements and people can be quite oblivious to others around them, not moving to make room or just giving the impression of rudeness. While attending an Amnesty International meeting last week I also found out that Hungarians have a problem with rascism which can be seen with the segregation of roma children in school both indirect segregation and direct. Also discussed at the meeting was the problem of domestic abuse and apparently 1 Hungarian woman dies a week as a result of domestic violence the highest rate per capita in Europe.

So the average hungarian has their good and bad traits but that is just like any other nationality. So I hope that through this short essay I have hit upon some of both the negative and positive aspects of the character of the “average hungarian”. I also hope I haven’t been too judgemental and have been fair?

Peter Eric Wahlrab

Paul and his Window(and Frank)

Paul doesn’t like his bedroom window well actually it’s not his window rather his parents window. Actually no it’s the banks’ window as pauls’ parents are still paying off their lifelong mortgage for a badly built 3 bedroom semi in a small underdeveloped town in dublins commuter belt. Paul doesn’t like the town much either as he doesn’t like swimming and gaelic games and there isn’t much else for paul to do outside of school time. Actually no, there is horse riding but that's too expensive and dangerous says pauls mammy and daddy. Paul has a list of what he likes and doesn’t like. Paul has a long list of things he doesn’t like, but someday Paul will work in a job he like, marry a girl he likes and have children (andrew & sarah) who like him.

Anyway so Paul doesn’t like ‘his’ window in ‘his’ bedroom because sometimes at night a crazy man looks through it, paul thinks he’s concocting a plan to murder paul. Sometimes the man looks through the window at paul, while paul pretends to be asleep. Paul can feel the mans eyes burn marks into his skin and pierce his soul which apparently can be sold to the devil at some american crossroads at night. Supposedly that’s how one can become a musician but Paul’s mammy says that it’s not true and only through practice can one become a musician at which point daddy makes a remake regarding his golf and a word paul doesn’t understand but used it once in school and got into trouble.

So the man is destroying pauls soul while simultaneously concocting a devious murder plot after which he shall escape to cuba to smoke cigars which have been rubbed along the crotches of elderly women. The elderly women in Pauls town smell funny and talk too much about nothing interesting like pokemon or soccer which paul loves. Paul is a big aston villa fan because daddy says Martin O’Neill is going to bring back the european glory days. Maybe this will mean paul can go live with nan and eat glorious buns all day and have stew on saturdays. Paul has friends who say they don’t like stew but paul thinks that’s because their Nan's don’t make it properly or their Nan's are in the grave yard where people’s bodies go after their souls go to heaven unless of course the soul were sold to the devil then the devil would have your soul forever and poke you with the fireplace poker except it’ll have 3 spokes instead of one because the devil had them specially made due to the sheer increase of work load. This increase in work load is due to the amount of people selling their souls to become musicians and then spending all their money on crack and whatnot and dying early deaths like the Pete fella will surly do. Dad says that pete fella didn’t have very good parents.

Ok yeah Paul now is worried about this madman outside his window. Surly he must be cold and tired, does he not work? Daddy is always tired when he comes home from work so this man, who paul has actually name frank, must be tired unless he still lives with his mum then his mum cook for him like pauls mum does. Although surly franks mum would give out to frank for being out so late and getting his clothes dirty. Also I’m sure franks mum would not approve of frank murdering paul as mammys are good natured and also know whats best and most importantly win all the arguements with daddy. Pauls thinks sometimes though that mammy has an unfair advantage since she decides who sleeps with her in her big bed or on the couch with yoda pauls black cat. Sometimes paul like to go into mammys room and sleep with daddy and her because of bad dreams induced by too much portsalu before bed time also when paul wets the bed he goes into mammys room. There’s the odd time though that mammy and daddy are angry and tell paul not to get into the big bed even though daddy is on top of mammy and there’s even more room than ever tonights one of those nights.

Frank sometimes when its windy knocks a branch of the near by tree against the window to make paul jump and then frank whistles pretending like he was as innocent as OJ simpson who is black. There is a black guy in pauls class called Ronald who once reported paul as a bully when paul said Ronald Mac Donald. apparently ronald had to move from his amazon rainforest homeland because ronal mac donald wanted to graise cattle there and this upset ronald but Paul really didn’t know this. It’s not fair when paul gets into trouble sometimes because he really didn’t know or understand what he may have done or what he may have said was bad. Paul said sorry but he knew he was innocent and also knew that this experience would probably leave some sort of mental damage which would affect him later in life.

So Frank must be allowed out late because its half nine and there is school tomorrow, maybe he doesn’t go to school. Paul would love not to have to go school and maybe just watch TV all day as all the good programs start at 9am and end at 3pm then they start again at 9pm and go on until Paul wakes up. Good television is like santa claus, no matter how early you get up you always seem to just miss him/it. Someday Paul will stay up all night and not have to worry about missing good tv or trying to get to sleep with franks eyes piecing through pauls skin and contaminating his soul.

When Paul owns a house he won’t have windows in his bedroom and it will be incased in a steel box like that movie with jodie foster which was very similar in context and feeling to the one of her on the aeroplane where she loses her child like Paul lost his action man’s utility belt. Paul knows a lot about films because his friend nicholas brings a magazine called empire into school because his da has a “subscrpition”. Paul gets to read empire after nicholas is finished with it in the toilet during big break which is 40mins long! sometimes after nicholas is finished with magazine it has stains on it like what snots look like when you have a runny nose. Paul usually just wipes the snots on the underside of the table where he puts all his snots although all his are green except when he helped daddy dig a hole for a second septic tank which mamy said was illegal and not to do it but daddy did it anyway. Daddy always says if bertie can get away with it why can’t I. so after digging that hole pauls snots were brown mammy said it was because of the dust paul thought this was great and played with the snot for 37mins.

Paul can’t leave his bed to go to the loo,
Because Paul would have to,
Turn on the light,
This would surly give him a fright,
When he looked outside at the crazy man,
Concocting a Nasty plan full of malice and spite.
